Progress Albums

May 18th 16

I began my first saas app Progress Albums at the start of the year. It was a solution to help personal trainers improve their marketing.

From my own experience at bootcamp and seeing the amount of social shares and interest I thought it would be a good fit. I tried to do things properly - reaching out and arranging interviews and beta testers of potential users. The feedback initially was positive but never really made any traction.

Scaffolding

  • Rails API with Devise for authentication
  • MySQL on RDS
  • Framework 7 for native looking web experience

Learning Outcomes

  • Learning how to configure AWS for scalable hosting was the biggest gain albeit unnecessary
  • New front-end framework while not my favourite API did look and feel good
  • Lots of user interviews and feedback
  • Mailing list

Issues

  • Too long to build
  • Should have asked for money upfront or similar for validation earlier
