I discovered some roles in my area with finder fees. I wanted an excuse to spend some money on adverts and decided that this would be worth a punt. So, I mocked up this page and went to town testing adverts.

Adverts

The cost per click seemed high. However, considering the rates of commission I was comfortable. It was also much cheaper when compared to other cities like London.

I soon discovered that trying to advertise to a hyper local audience is tricky. There are few people who you are wanting target e.g. developers in Glasgow. You can get in front of them but you will quickly run out of new users.

I didn’t imagine that showing the same people the same advert over and over would be successful. I tried experimenting with different versions - displaying various images and text. The difference I found were nominal. However, with such few viewers you can’t really do any analysis through A/B testing.

Learning the various paid marketing channels - Adwords, Facebook and Twitter - was interesting. I was surprised to find that Facebook had by far the best click through rates. Facebook users are possibly more bored and therefore more likely to be enticed by interesting opportunities.

I did managed to get some leads but unfortunately none where hired. I think if I were to continue with the experiment I would try out more traditional advertising. Due to the low numbers it probably would be worth even trying to get in touch with employees individually.
